The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is holding the Meridian $20 Challenge, a one-day matching donation opportunity up to $15,000 from midnight through 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9.

The Meridian $20 Challenge is funded by Meridian Health’s $15,000 matching donation. When individuals donate $20 online or to a physical red kettle, Meridian will match and quadruple the donation to become $100. Donations to the $20 Challenge will help the nonprofit’s 13 corps community centers continue to provide vital programs and services to those in need throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

Salvation Army supporters can join in the Meridian $20 Challenge by making a $20 donation in the following methods:

  • Texting GIFT to 24365
  • Donating money via an online kettle, Paypal, Venmo or physical red kettle
  • Visiting SAmetrodetroit.org
  • Calling 877-SAL-MICH

“This holiday season, Meridian is honored to sponsor the $20 Challenge as a way to uplift our communities and ensure the spirit of giving extends to social assistance programs The Salvation Army is providing to individuals and families across Michigan. We join hands with The Salvation Army to help alleviate the burdens families might face and to make a positive difference in their lives – not just during the holiday season but every day,” says Meridian’s Vice President, Legislative & Government Affairs, Nicole Felix, who also serves on The Salvation Army’s Metro Advisory Board.

The Meridian $20 Challenge coincides with The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit participating in The National Commander’s Red Kettle Challenge to help the nonprofit raise $2 million nationally. Commissioner Kenneth G. Hodder, National Commander for The Salvation Army, is challenging Salvation Army officers, employees, community supporters and others to raise more funds than him in a bell ringing shift from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9.

The community can support The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit by donating money to the red kettle at the Kroger located at 23191 Marter Rd. in St. Clair Shores. Major Toni Dorrell will be volunteering with Megan Slaven, Meridian’s senior director of communications, and Leslie Sosa of Meridian’s community engagement team, to raise funds.

“The Salvation Army is counting on metro Detroiters to step up to not one, but two challenges on December 9. We have faith that the combined generosity of Meridian and our community will help spread Love Beyond Christmas,” said Major Toni Dorrell, metro Detroit area commander for The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division. “To those who are able to give, please consider donating this Christmas season. With a simple $20 bill, you will help provide meals, gifts, warmth and hope families who need it most.”
